There’s so much joy in discovering something larger than yourself—a purpose that aligns with your values, an authentic way of life, and a community where you truly belong. These are the foundations of living a fulfilling life outside ourselves, grounding us in connections while guiding us toward a brighter future.
At Sacred Storm Buffalo, finding purpose takes on many forms. It’s found in the hands-on work of buffalo butchery and sustainable food production, the revival of traditions that have weathered centuries, and the drive to rebuild what was nearly lost. Here, participants reclaim Indigenous food sovereignty while deepening ties to their community and culture.
Preserving Traditions Though Action
Sacred Storm Buffalo empowers Native youth by revitalizing traditional Lakota practices, specifically buffalo butchery and full utilization of the bison, to foster self-sufficiency, cultural restoration, and economic development. It’s a practice rooted in Lakota values like Wolakota (harmony and balance), where the entire animal is honored throughout the process of nurturing our buffalo herds, harvesting, butchering and distributing the meat. It’s a hands-on way to reconnect with ancestral practices while building a more self-sufficient future.
This work also serves a broader purpose: reclaiming Indigenous food sovereignty while strengthening connections between participants, their communities, and one another. These collective efforts help young people develop pride in their heritage while creating a local, sustainable food economy that uplifts everyone involved.

Building Community and Connection
When basic needs like food and shelter are uncertain, it’s nearly impossible to think beyond survival. Stress and instability take up mental space that could be used for higher aspirations, such as building strong, healthy social bonds with others who genuinely support each other’s journeys.
Because we recognize that many apprentices face housing insecurity, we wanted to provide the sense of security they needed to stop “just getting by” and start building something that would last. With that idea in mind, we opened The Warrior’s Lodge to provide apprentices with a secure place to stay while they complete their training.
Within this environment, we foster a mentorship-based learning model, where apprentices work alongside experienced butchers, processors, and community leaders who guide them through every step of the trade. Through structured apprenticeships, they gain practical skills in buffalo butchery, sustainable meat processing, and food distribution, all within a framework that honors Lakota values.

Finding Joy by Finding Purpose
Mastering a skill builds confidence, but applying it for the betterment of others creates purpose. With every buffalo our apprentices process and every meal they help provide, they are strengthening not just themselves but the people around them.
This investment in the community is what makes the work truly meaningful. When apprentices leave the program, they are responsible for uplifting those who come next. They bring food security to their families, contribute to a more sustainable food system, and ensure that the knowledge they’ve gained is passed on. Over time, their efforts lay the foundation for future generations, creating a world where our relatives inherit something stronger than what came before.
In finding purpose, there is joy: The joy of knowing that what was nearly lost is thriving again. The joy of seeing Native youth reclaim their role as stewards of the land. The joy of building something that will last.
The work is hard, but it’s worth it to uplift people today so that generations to come will also be able to find their own purpose, way of life, and place to belong.
